One example is that religious speaches are usually not allowed at public school functions.

Ms. Murray's comments were not of a religious nature.

This isn't considered censoring religious people but rather keeping the religious ideas from at least seeming to get a government endosement. People who are opposed to Patty Murray or don't like her speech might similarly think that the school system should not endorse it.

The school system did not endorse what Ms. Murray's comments were but rather as an important elected official of WA State invited her to speak. Its quite common in these united states.

The need to avoid the appearense of endorsement is not quite as big because you don't have the establishment question but the idea of not endorsing controversial statements is similar.

Her comments were not very controversial for those in WA state who chose not to misinterpret her. As the representative of the second party, Vance chose to make political hay and misconstrue her comments but most people saw through his maneuvering.

The one thing I can say is that any aid he might have given Afghanistan was dwarfed by 1 - US aid, and 2 - the problems he caused or contributed to in that country.

If we give so much aid, then the question I think we need to ask ourselves is why is all this aid not getting us the goodwill we so very much need. That's the point Ms. Murray was trying to make. Winning the war on terrorism will take more than just military might to win.
