China United Telecom Says CDMA Subscribers Exceed 7 Mln

Thursday December 26, 5:59 am ET

BEIJING (Dow Jones)--State-owned telecom operator China United Telecommunications Co., the parent company of China Unicom Ltd. , said subscribers to its code division multiple access, or CDMA, network have topped 7 million.

China United Telecom President Wang Jianzhou said Thursday that its CDMA subscribers reached 7.01 million as of Wednesday, the official Xinhua News Agency reported.

Wang said the company plans to chalk up an additional 13 million subscribers during the next year, according to the report. He also said China United will strive to ensure that revenue matches expenses during 2003.

China United is the country's second largest mobile phone network operator, launching a CDMA network this year to operate alongside its existing general system for mobile communications, or GSM, service.

The second phase of the company's rollout of its national CDMA mobile network is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2003, the report said.

The latest projections by the parent company are in line with comments made Monday by officials from the New York- and Hong Kong-listed unit.

China Unicom Executive Director Tan Xinhui told reporters in Hong Kong that the listed unit currently has "more than 4 million" CDMA subscribers. The part of the network operated by the listed company also expects to add a further 11.4 million CDMA subscribers in 2003, officials said at an extraordinary general meeting.
