DoCoMo, AT&T Wireless Plan U.S. 3G Service

By Dec. 2004
Thursday December 26, 3:46 am ET

TOKYO -- NTT DoCoMo Inc. said Thursday its U.S. affiliate, AT&T Wireless Services Inc. , will launch a third-generation mobile-telephone service by the end of December 2004 in four major cities in the U.S.

It will be the first full-scale 3G mobile-telephone service based on the W- CDMA, or wideband code division multiple access, technology to be offered in North America, NTT DoCoMo said.

The latest plan marks a downsizing and delay of NTT DoCoMo and AT&T Wireless's goal agreed in December 2000 to launch W-CDMA 3G services in 13 of the top 50 U.S. cities by June 2004.

NTT DoCoMo said services will be offered in San Francisco, Seattle, Dallas and San Diego.

NTT DoCoMo is the world's only commercial 3G operator using the fastest available technology of W-CDMA.

W-CDMA handsets can send and receive data at a faster rate than older generation handsets, but few applications have been developed to fully take advantage of the speed.

The service in Japan has so far met with a cool reception, partly due to bulky, heavy and expensive handsets with batteries that don't last as long as those in 2.5G phones.

AT&T Wireless will set up a technology committee to conduct planning of the 3G service jointly with NTT DoCoMo. The Japanese company will also send a second representative, who will be appointed to the AT&T Wireless's board of directors.

... end of December 2004?

4 cities?

... "full-scale 3G mobile-telephone service"?

"By the end of December 2004 the company plans a commercial launch in sections of four U.S. cities that have a high concentration of mobile professionals."

LOL!

Was DoCoMo forced - by its own technology shortcomings - to cut AWE contractural slack?

That $10B is buying Tachikawa thin gruel...
