Compal Electronics aims to ship three million handsets in 2003
Huang Kung Tien, Taipei; Chinmei Sung, DigiTimes.com [Thursday 26 December 2002]

Compal Electronics, citing rising demand for CDMA handsets in China, expects to double its handset shipments from an estimated 1.5 million units this year to three million next year, of which CDMA models will account for half of the volume.

The only Taiwanese company that produces CDMA mobile phones, Compal estimates it will ship 500,000 CDMA handsets this year. Eastcom, a Chinese mobile phone vendor, is its biggest CDMA handset client in China.

Compal said that besides itself only a handful of South Korean companies are competing for CDMA handset contract-manufacturing orders. At the present, China and South America are major CDMA handset markets, according to Compal.

The company said it does not plan to launch own-brand CDMA phones within the near future.
