Kudos from me. Now, are you happy? <g>
Well, that's something <g>. However, the response of the Arab world leaves real doubt in most US observers that any US policy would win any kudos from the Arab world. Clinton really went to bat for Arafat in 2000; most of the Arab world seems to regard the solution proposed at Taba as a humiliation. If Taba's a humiliation, they are never going to be happy with US policy, ever.
Seriously, I think both sides in Isr/Pal situation showed their incapability at reaching a solution unassisted. An intervention from the US with equal pressure to both sides seems the only chance for peace at this point. Sorry but there just is not another superpower around.
Seriously, I don't think "both sides" showed incapability, only one -- the side that said "no" and walked off without ever making or countering an offer, then started a war. Also, seriously, the idea that the Israeli/Pal conflict is a problem that can be treated separately from the problem of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and Syria pouring gasoline on the fire via Hamas, Hizbullah, and now Al Qaeda is nonsense and I suspect we both know it. It will scarcely be an improvement for peace if the Israelis withdraw in favor of a Palestinian Taliban state on the West Bank and Gaza. |
