"Polls" have nothing to do with democratic principles.

Elected representatives are supposed to make best efforts to represent the desires and wishes of their constituents.

Nonsense. Elected representatives are supposed to represent their constituents' interests, which frequently are different from their desires and wishes. We elect congresspeople on the basis of whom we think will best represent our INTERESTS -- not our individual "desires and wishes".

Again, I refer you to "Profiles in Courage" for an extensive, intelligent discussion of this subject -- perhaps over your head a bit, but still worth reading.

I would note, also, that the last "Profiles in Courage" award (administered by the Kennedy family) was given to Gerald Ford, a Republican, for his exceptional courage in rendering a pardon for Richard Nixon in the midst of heavy criticism for doing so.
