CONTACT: Bill Murray, (202) 393-2100 12/20/2002 FRC: Sen. Lott Has Done the Right Thing WASHINGTON, D.C. -- In response to Sen. Trent Lott's decision to step down as Majority Leader in the U.S. Senate, Family Research Council President Ken Connor released the following statement: "We commend Sen. Lott for doing the right thing. It has become increasingly apparent in recent days that so long as Sen. Lott continued as Majority Leader, the nation's focus would remain on his recent remarks rather than on the conservative agenda.
"Further, there has been a crisis of confidence as to whether, in the wake of his unfortunate remarks, Sen. Lott could adequately represent the historic values of the Republican party and the conservative agenda--values which includes defending the rights of all persons, black or white, rich or poor, born or unborn.
"Sen. Lott has been a consistent friend of the family during his years as both as Congressman and a Senator. He still has an important role to play in the U.S. Senate, and we look forward to working with him and the new Senate leadership in continuance of our mission to defend family, faith and freedom." |
