The restaurant was pretty dark, and I spot metered on mom's face, which was in partial light from the window across the way. The result was a very dark background, and I darkened it further in Photoshop.

I like dark backgrounds, so for my indoor flash shots, I'm using a piece of black velvet as a backdrop. Here's an example, from a photo I call "Doting Dad". It's of a friend who came over for Christmas dinner, and his daughter, who is visiting from out of town.
