After seeing what happened in Bill's case, all I can say the reps. avoided a potential big mess, which could have damaged the party. Courage or pork; probably both.

The Nixon pardon was bigger than party politics. The nation had been through a literal trauma; the pardon was done as a means to begin a healing process. I think Ford was thinking about more than just salvaging the party, and in fact, he took a great deal of political heat for having done so. Some have said it cost him the election.


And why do you think that was? He pardoned a common crook. And from what I read recently, Nixon's handling of the USSR was pretty cheesy as well.
