Z-shops was a flop, but the Toys-R-Us seems to have been very successful and profitable.

I think these 2 things (z-shops and "toys r us" as you call it) are morphing into a more successful strategy of the retail portal driven by product (vs. by vendor as is the case with ebay and the "old" z-shops).

This is where you choose an item and all sellers and their offerings for that item show up in the search. For electronics you usually get Amazon itself, then Circuit City (the "toys r us" model) and then some refurbished vendors in the list. This is the old z-shops. So I wouldn't say z-shops was a failure, but amazon needs to present something different from ebay, which they are now doing with the new format.
