you story pretty much falls into line with the story i hear from a friend who is a broker... what he hears mostly when he has told people to dump stocks... "it's not a loss until i sell!!" and back in the good ole bubble days when they actually were sitting on gains...when suggested they sell.. "if i sell i will have to pay taxes!!!" serious denial and lack of understanding out there... and of course the bear market rallies only serve to "keep the hope alive".. at this point i really don't know what kind of impetus will cause the bagholders to throw in the towel.
