Ericsson says China Unicom ups wireless order
Reuters, Friday December 27, 3:48 pm ET

LOS ANGELES, Dec 27 (Reuters) - Telecom equipment maker Ericsson (Stockholm:ERICb.ST - News) on Friday said it has won an additional $25 million in orders for equipment from cellular carrier China Unicom for next-generation network gear.

Ericsson said the new orders bring its commitment from Unicom, China's No. 2 wireless carrier, to $175 million for CDMA 2000 1X equipment. The initial $150 million agreement was signed in October.

China Unicom is expected to roll out nationwide services based on that network standard, which offers improved call quality and higher data rates over standard CDMA networks, by the beginning of 2003.

China Unicom Group, the parent of China Unicom Ltd. (HKSE:0762.HK - News), on Thursday said it had signed up more than 7 million people in China this year for its CDMA network, based on the standard developed by Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - News)
