TIMES NEWS NETWORK[ SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2002 01:51:26 AM ]
NEW DELHI: Amidst the hype of Reliance Infocom launch what went completely unnoticed was that the network inaugurated by Union communications minister Pramod Mahajan today used corDECT handsets and switches in Chorwad, Dhirubhai Ambani’s birth place. corDECT technology is indigenously developed by IIT-Chennai and the systems used by Reliance have been supplied by Himachal Futuristic Communications (HFCL).

Reliance is using corDECT technology extensively in its network. Relinace has plans to install corDECT systems in 1,500 towns. It has already connected more than 450 towns using this system. By the end of February, deployment of corDECT in all the 1,500 towns will be complete. HFCL has been given contract to supply and install the corDECT systems in the entire network.

The company has covered more than 2,000 villages using corDECT system and has already installed corDECT systems of a total capacity of more than 1.5m lines.

As per its network plan, the company is deploying corDECT systems in small urban centres and villages. In big cities Reliance is using CDMA technology. corDECT is a wireless technology that enables both the transmission of voice and data. corDECT enables wireless data transmission at the rate of 70 kbps. The advantage with the corDECT system is that the subscribers are connected with internet round the clock.

Government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) are already using the corDECT systems in their networks.

This seems to go against all the other stories I've been reading about Reliance's plans. Anyone able to explain it?
