For me, there is an implied reciprocal relationship of trust between the military and their civilian commanders. In the service, you have your life on the line. You are dependent on that trust that you will not foolishly or frivolously be placed in harm's way. It behooves the civilian authorities to use all possible intelligence and guile to achieve well-considered national goals without endangering the troops. IMO military force should be used only in a "pushed into a corner" last resort situation. We're talking about peoples lives.

One of my biggest problems with the anti-war movement in the ‘60s, was the typical anti-troop attitude. By my way of thinking, they were deserving of sympathy, not derision. In a similar vein, I now fear for our young men and women that have patriotically volunteered to serve their country. Because of a failure to understand the nature of Islam, I see our troops occupying Muslim lands with a large bull’s eye painted on their uniforms.

What seems to be missing at higher levels is insight. We’re in a war, but in a very fundamental way this is not a military war, but a cultural war. Foolishly exposing your military gives the advantage to your enemy. This is a war between modernity and an early seventh century Arabian peninsula mindset. Properly utilized in this war, rock ‘n’ roll can be more powerful than a B-52. Subvert their youth with revolutionary ideas like basic universal human rights. That idea is in fundamental conflict with the Qur’an. The turning away from fundamental Islam by the youth of Iran is indicative that modernity can win this war with few if any shots fired.

But that is something that just never occurs to the current powers that be. No “out of the box” thinking. Just call out the troops, and force them to our will. And from people with little or no military experience.

All of this has implications for JW’s favorite metal. The current course will inevitably led to an erosion in confidence, and an increase in fear. Fertile ground for gold bugs to prosper.
