Friedman and his ilk (very sad hack piece)

Dr. Hassan Al-Ahdal/ Al-Madinah

arabnews.com

Our newspapers tend to fill their pages with translated articles taken from the foreign press. In most cases, the contents contradict our Muslim nation’s stands and carry views and ideas contrary to our customs, traditions and values.

It is obvious the papers do not draw any line of distinction between the foreign writers known for their hostility and enmity toward Islam and the Arabs and others who express moderate positions. They do not differentiate between a fair writer and an arrogant one, whose articles are full of hatred and enmity.

Mostly, the articles are translated in full without any commentary. This gives readers the impression that they are going through an American or other Western newspaper, and not one printed in Arabic.

There are many Western newspapers which publish articles containing fair and just views which do not agree with their governments’ official position. Unfortunately, these seldom find their way into our own papers. This is because editors here are mostly drawn to famous names that reflect the official American position which dominates the media over there.

I do not object to our papers carrying what the foreign press writes about us. On the contrary, I am a strong supporter of our information centers and other research institutions monitoring and recording every word written or said about us in the foreign media. This opens our eyes to many things and show us the shortcomings in our political and social life.

What I do not like is for translated articles to be published without a comment or reply. This saves the reader from falling under the overwhelming influence of the Western media, especially when reading the attacks on Muslims and Arabs presented in a distorted way.

Anyone reading the American and European papers must by now have been fully aware of the hatred and enmity against Arabs held by writers like Thomas Friedman of the New York Times and many others.

Friedman openly boasts his anti-Arab views and his open support for Israel. His diatribe against the Arabs far exceeds that of others like him. This is a man who gained popularity by frequently visiting Arab countries where he lands as a guest attending our intellectual, cultural and other forums.

In the presence of his hosts, as well as in his articles appearing in our newspapers, he continues to demean and ridicule us. When are we going to put an end to this ridiculous state of affairs?
