WLL's here to stay, but nothing unlimited about it:
Mahajan TIMES NEWS NETWORK [ SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2002 01:54:20 AM ]
MUMBAI: Even Reliance will not be allowed to have unlimited mobility. Limited mobility will remain limited,” said Pramod Mahajan, telecom minister, who wants an end to litigation and more peace in the telecom sector.
“WLL is here to stay,” he said after the launch of Reliance Infocomm. “By the time the TDSAT decides on the issue, there will be a few million subscribers of WLL. Once TDSAT takes a decision, the government will give its opinion,” he said.
Although interconnect is not a choice, but a birthright in case of telecom companies, Mahajan said that on commercial issues, the matter would have to be decided between the companies.
The government will not interfere, except if there is no solution even after approaching Trai and TDSAT. Regarding the fifth and sixth operator, Mr Mahajan said that the National Telecom Policy ’99 provides for reviewing the cellular sector every two years.
“It was last reviewed in ’00 and the fourth operator licences were given by ’01. Now that the two-year period is over, we have asked the regulator to look at the issues of market and spectrum availability for fifth and sixth cellular licences,” he said.
