"The headline is that the Clinton Administration was engaged in CONTAINING North Korea

...but they were not contained, that is the problem. It is not a new problem in history, that once you pay the Danegeld, you must pay more and more for worse and worse results. "

Now we need a definition of containment.
Then we will need to agree on a word opposite containment. I suggest something that encompasses ... WAR/DEATH/INVASION.

Containment and MAD worked for most of the 2nd half of the 20th Century. And that was with a foe with comparable armaments.

Why all the war/death/invasion/bomb solutions?
We have been paying the Danegeld to everybody for a long time. It is part of our foreign policy. We don't want North Korea to go away nor do we want it as part of the USA. We just want different behavior.

And I don't know if the "results are worse and worse". We have avoided a nuclear war and toppled the Soviet Communist Government.

A look at historical timelines reveal events which can be plotted as: War/battles/Settlement/Negotiation/Diplomacy/Engagement
/Treaty/NegotiationDiplomacy..... and on and on and on.

At this stage of civilization we should already recognize these patterns and minimize the bellicose points on the graph in favor of the more valuable peace-type events.

Furthermore, please remind me again why we are going to invade Iraq which may have the bomb soon but "encourage the resumption of engagement" with North Korea which has a bomb and is yelling "Up yours". Consistency in Foreign Policy is desirable.
