US officials do not fight. Soldiers do. Kerry was a soldier. He was sticking up for other soldiers. If he said "criminal" and I don't know if he did then he was right. The Nixon and Johnson administrations lied constantly to the US public about that war. Everything from inflated enemy body counts to denying bombing outside Vietnam to the very event which sparked the war. And they lied about their confidence to win the war. We partnered with a corrupt regime and we lost the hearts and minds of the very people we were supposedly fighting for. The whole world was against us pretty much. And we had no real strategic interest there in the first place other than to stop a "domino effect" which never happened. Did it? So 55,000 killed, countless enemy, huge financial costs taking 20 years to pay off, and even conservatives were for ending that war ASAP in the end. So most agreed with Kerry and he was a hero to vets and liberals alike. And he still is. Moderates and many conservatives too.
