Passives are dirt cheap, too many well qualified suppliers. Passives are low barrier low tech. Yes, most competition is Chinese. Anything next gen is not selling (by definition) so is irrelevant to near term sales.

If JDSU is spending R&D on passives, it is a big negative to me unless they are assured a good market and a good margin. In passives, this is not likely.

Passives are dogs. Dominating a dog business by buying market share with investors money (which is what they are doing when they bleed cash to sell low margin stuff) is a stupid and/or desperate strategy.
