There is certainly no shame in trying to resolve a situation via peaceful means. Humanitarian aid has been the keystone of our foreign policy for decades and rightly so. Carter had no way of knowing that Jong had no intention of upholding his end of the agreement.
It's no different than dealing with a school bully.. If you show weakness, or permit him to shake you down once for your lunch money, then you know he'll be back down the road...
If the US were again to try appeasement principles with this individual, then the shame would be on us...this time. Not so the first time. |
