And what's so bad about people not buying so much junk for Xmas?

Many of us in the investment and high tech community bemoan the fact that longterm investments in the future are not being made, and that Americans are too wrapped up in immediate gratification and "now."

And yet when the "consumage" slows down, when the junky crap that Walmart sells is not selling as well as their shareholders had hoped, we hear talk about a "disastrous Christmas."

I consider it sane not to buy junk, not to consume for the sake of consuming. If it hurts some vendor or shopowner who like to sell me stuff, too bad.

This is what _saving_ has _always_ done. It has always hurt the hucksters and jivesters who want to convince people that they should spend, spend, spend.

Even Bush had this same screwed-up notion, that his "tax rebate" should be in a form (cash) to encourage more consumage.

How about reducting marginal tax rates on investments, to encourage less consumption and more investment?

No way, as that would produce a "bad Christmas."

The Christmas we get we deserve.
