quality and potential utility of the movie mode feature of the G3?

We had a production line squeezing oranges today. In addition to a couple of stills a short movie seemed like a good way to capture the moment. The G3 has a max movie of 3 minutes. Three minutes seems like enough time for most events I have tried to capture. One could shoot two movies if more time were needed. My wife was using the camera and she got it right the first time. All one has to do is rotate one of the dials to movie and then hit the shutter. Then hit the shutter again to stop recording. You can't change zoom settings while in movie mode.

Movies on tape are a pain to label and store. Keeping a movie clip along with still images is convenient.

I use the max res (320x240) which is rather small on a computer screen....maybe a 4 or 5 inch square on the monitor I use. It plays back full screen on the TV set using the camera's audio video output.

It shoots at fifteen frames per second....TV is somewhere around 30 frames per second.

IMO the video and sound quality is rather good...certainly not camcorder quality.

Sound annotation with stills is another useful feature. We took pictures of our Christmas gifts and added sound annotation. We played the stills with sound at grandma's house the same day. We are also using stills with sound annotation to document our belongings.

I recall reading somewhere that you need to use a fast CF card with movies. I don't think the cards I have are fast and they work fine. I started with a 128 MB card and graduated to a 256 MB card in a couple of weeks. Now I have a 512 MB card on the way:)
