That's true on a lot of threads. I have felt inhibited by this.

One thing I have learned the hard way is to always look for both sides - If I'm long XYZ, I always search for what will cause XYZ to fall apart....

Online forums can induce group-think. This is useful, because it can educate you quickly to look things in a new way. Like valuing a compnay based on Market Cap + Debt divided by cash flow, instead of P/E.

Based on a small number of observations, the better online forums have a few things in common -

1)Most posters are generally polite, even when they disagree
2) Newcomers are welcome to ask questions, and get reasonable explantions
3) There is usually some slightly irrelevant topic, like football, resturants, food, etc. among the financial related posts.
4) There is usually some MINOR mis-understanding or name calling going on, but usually only TWO people invloved. The rest of the thread seems to be ammused/indifferent...

I don't yet understand the reasons for 3 & 4 yet.
