NEW YORK, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. <MSFT.O> and
other technology stocks edged tentatively higher in pre-open
trade on Monday as investors got ready to close the books on
2002 in a week shortened by the New Year's Day holiday.
The software giant's shares inched up to $53.10 on the
Instinet electronic brokerage system from $52.97 at Friday's
close.
Cisco Systems <CSCO.O>, the No. 1 maker of equipment for
directing Internet traffic, rose to $13.09 from $13.01 at
Friday's close. Computer maker Sun Microsystems <SUNW.O> ticked
up to $3.35 from $3.25 at Friday's close.
United Airlines parent UAL Corp. <UAL.N> crept higher after
officials representing United pilots and flight attendants said
on Saturday they would recommend approving temporary pay cuts
to help the bankrupt airline reduce its costs. UAL rose to
$1.42 from $1.38 at Friday's close.
Stocks were set to open flat to higher, with Standard &
Poor's 500 stock index futures for March up 4.50 points at
876.30 and Nasdaq futures for the same month up 2 points at
1,004.
