Your views are so far to the right that your definition of liberalism and its so-called roots are either historically or factually inaccurate, although sometimes I wonder whether it was "liberals" themselves who chose the label or whether it was the way Jesse Helms used to spit the word out in a most pejorative way that set the context for the contemporary pervasive disdain in which they are held by the far right.

There was a time when I used the term in a pejorative sense myself, but for entirely different reasons. I thought liberals had no guts. I thought they were intellectually dishonest for trying to split ideological hairs to ingratiate themselves. But that's beside the point.

To paraphrase an old aphorism, patriotism is the last refuge of tyrants. So when your hurl that charge(of Treason) at people you disagree with, you place yourself outside any real debate-or is it that you think someone even farther to the right than Ashcroft should be the guardian of our constitution?

As for what you call class hatred and racism, they both pre-date Marx by a good deal, unless you're talking about the kind of racism that inspired anti-black hatred to illiterate elements of majority groups in exchange for votes. We neded only look as far back as the 2000 presidential campaign to find examples of that. Is that Marxist as well?

Our republic was created to protect us against backward cultures? Did you really say that? Kinky though they were, my recollection is that the first white settlers of this continent came here for reasons of religious freedom. Now you propose that "we" should not only declare ourselves "free," but superior? How much brutality has been justified, how much blood has been shed already on that score? You think the Crusades were all self-defense? You think Catholicism spread thoughout North and South America through intellectual persuasion? Nope. Protect ourselves from religious fanatics? Yes. But not at the expense of becoming fanatics ourselves.
