Purchasing expansion index falls to 51.3 in December from 54.3 in November, below estimates.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Business activity in the U.S. Midwest expanded in December for a second consecutive month, but at a slower pace than in November, according to figures released Monday.

The National Association of Purchasing Management-Chicago index slipped to 51.3 from 54.3 in November. A reading below 50 indicates a contracting regional manufacturing sector, while a reading above 50 signals expansion.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the December index at 53.0.

The index slipped below 50 in September and October, showing contraction for the first time in eight months. The pullback sparked concern about the U.S. economic recovery, especially since the index began to show signs of improvement in February, the first time in 18 months it was above 50.

The employment component of the index rose to 50.3 from 43.3 in November. Prices paid rose to 62.1 from 57.2.
