They viewed the Trade Center as the physical embodiment or the pillars of the american capitalist system. Thats why the frequent attempts at bringing it down. When the Blind shiek or one of his supporters?? was interviewed they also admitted to trying to take it down. Some bomb experts in NY back then believed they had come very close.
This is why their current concentration on so-called soft targets as indonesian and kenyan hotels show how much al quaida has been weakened. They can cause much trouble in the world no doubt, but hopefully never again for a major strike. mike
