Thats demonization John.

Hardly. It's hard political talk, Mike. Tom DeLay is about as far right as one can go in this country. I could look up his positions and statements and bore everyone to death with his views but it would waste thread space. The most recent, very small illustration that pops to mind, is that he wouldn't let his daughters go either to Texas A&M or Baylor, I forget which, because they permitted dancing. Most likely it ws A&M.

As for Bush being in hock to the evangelists, that's a fairly long story with lots of material. South Carolina primary. The deal which produced Ashcroft as the Attorney General at their insistence. Bush II's fears of their role in his dad's loss in 92. on and on and on.

Lott was hardly the far right. Many of the right wing Rep senators wanted him to go because he was not sufficiently pure; struck too many deals rather than waged ideological warfare. In my mind, striking deals is what governing is about in the senate; not ideological warfare.

As for judicial appointments, I hope you are right but I doubt it. They would be wise to take advantage of a bit of strength right now to move to the center for the judicial appointments but my reading is that's one of the areas in which they lack the freedom to do so.

But, as Bill often says, time will tell.
