There is something called sodium pentathol I believe, that gets the prisoner talking about all he knows from as far back as he can remember.
Sodium pentathol and amital are considered psychological "torture" by some countries.. And they are quite useful, but not perfect, in extracting the truth from a subject.
American interrogation techniques, (the ones I'm familiar personally with), as you correctly noted refrain from physical torture since it's likely the subject will tell you whatever you want to hear in order to avoid further suffering.. I was never trained to use physical torture. However, there's nothing wrong with sleep deprivation and playing "tag-team" with 4-5 other interrogators.
And yes Zonder.. it's supposed to be a civilized world. But civilization is something we've created, not something that is instinctive. It's governed by rules that EVERYONE has to abide by for it to properly function.. When a party decides to use uncivilized methods (in fact, utterly barbaric) to achieve their ends, such as suicide bombings and using civilian airliners as bombs, then civilized behavior takes a back seat to unmasking the network and organization that supports and directs these terrorists.
I believe we should never slip from our high moral ground. There can be no excuse for torturing people.
I'm sure you do Zonder, and that's an admirable trait since it's far too easy to lose one's humanity..
And I'm sure that will be the first thing running through your mind should you ever happen to be confronted by a nasty smelly guy who puts a gun to your head and tells you to take your clothes off and submit to him sexually...
I'm sure you'll tell yourself that you shouldn't fight back because that's not the civilized thing to do.. That you should just get it over with and call the police and file a report..
But in interacting with you Zonder, something tells me that's not exactly how you would respond in such a situation.. Something tells me that anyone attempting such an action upon you would be very sorry they ever made the attempt..
And you can be sure that, were I to stumble upon such a situation (you or anyone else) I would exact whatever torture or physical action necessary to stop the assault.. And I certainly wouldn't wait for the police or worry about breaking the law.
