Thanks AJ for your always perspicacious consideration and analysis.

Being of scientific attitude, I'm uncomfortable with lunging around ignoring statistics and hoping for random luck while incurring great expense.

I suppose the current situation is reasonable and definitely better than a mindless mysticism of 'alternative' therapies or charlatan con-jobs which would clog courts with fraud and damages claims.

I suppose the FDA originated in response to snake-oil salesmen conning the gullible, so I'm not necessarily keen to revert to the wild west and fire the statisticians.

But neither am I over-enamored with due process by officialdom which always [I can't offhand think of an exception] sacrifices some individuals to the 'greater good', which usually means the benefit of officialdom and acceptance of their indolence, lack of care, lack of ability and self-indulgence.

I imagine that an FDA sinecure is a cushy number.

PS: <If two out of three people get sick after eating five-day-old reheated turkey, I don't know whether I'd be in the class that would get sick, but I'll stay clear. And I'll continue to stay clear the next day, even though the stats might no longer be valid.>

I suspect that if you were about to die from starvation, and no other food was in prospect, you'd eat the turkey before it got worse. Dying from getting reheated turkey disease wouldn't be much worse than dying from starvation - even if the turkey shortened your life a few days earlier. Surviving to the next harvest and going on for years might be worth the risk.
