Hi Ski - Nice to have you back :)
It is the fact that weapons have advanced to a point when anyone who controls them has – by old standards – superhuman power.
Since when? What new weapon do we have that is more powerful than nuclear bombs (and that was WWII)?
Oh and by the way, seen in this light, what do you think about the new powers of the US president Mr W. Bush? <g> Was it or was it not a wise decision to put all his "superhuman power" into his hands, without ever having to get approval from the congress?
Those traditional historical “international platforms” a la UN give us no hope. They’ll keep flapping their mouths until it will be way too late.
I keep hearing this from people on SI and I keep reading almost the exact sentences from mainstream media. Just how it came to be installed everywhere so quick must be a marketing wonder.
Just because the UN opposes the flat out, unprovoked, and clearly oil-driven invasion of Iraq, it does not really mean that it is dysfunctional. Nor does it mean that there is anything to be too late about.
In case you have missed it, North Korea has a nuclear weapons program. They announced it (who knows why), the US cut their fuel oil supply in what I can only describe as extreme stupidity, thereby giving them the excuse to light up their nuclear reactor ("What else can we do? We have no energy supply!"). Now where is the US? Aren't we going to be too late there? Hello? :)
The world has changed.
No it has not. I went to school when armed people were popping kids right and left. Bombs would go off in the middle of the night and our windows (on 6th floor) would come crashing down.
The world has not changed. Americans woke up to the realities of the world. There is a difference, you know, unless you are to argue that America is the world and the rest does not count.
In the end, it doesn’t have to be – and it will probably not be – an American dictatorship, or an “empire”, but we’ll have to find a framework which will not allow crazies to have the potential to destroy continents.
I would be interested to hear your ideas on this. Because, from where I sit, it looks like either there will be a cooperation of many nations (i.e. something like the UN) or there will be American dictatorship. Any other options? |
