However, there's nothing wrong with sleep deprivation and playing "tag-team" with 4-5 other interrogators.

Sure. But do you believe it ends there? And how about the reports we all read that say prisoners were shipped to countries where American authorities knew they would be really and physically tortured?

But civilization is something we've created, not something that is instinctive.

True. However, it is our most valuable creation, one that sets us apart from mere beasts. At the first sign of threat, we really should not abandon it, I feel.

should you ever happen to be confronted by a nasty smelly guy who puts a gun to your head and tells you to take your clothes off

Are you saying that me poking the eyes out of an aggressor in a dark alley (after a kick in his family jewels, of course) is "losing my moral ground" in a way similar to physically torturing numerous persons, some of which might very well be innocent of any crime?

I think you are quite impossibly stretching the definition of "self defense" here, if you are going to say it involves torturing alleged collaborators a year after a terrorist attack.

Something tells me that anyone attempting such an action upon you would be very sorry they ever made the attempt..

Heh. I think so, too. Possibly why no such attempt ever took place, even though I lived in some dangerous places.

When a party decides to use uncivilized methods (in fact, utterly barbaric) to achieve their ends, such as suicide bombings and using civilian airliners as bombs, then civilized behavior takes a back seat to unmasking the network and organization that supports and directs these terrorists.

I disagree. If so, you should be able to say the same for serial killers, and yet, they go through trial, have access to defense lawyers, and if they are to be put to death, it is done relatively painlessly, with lethal injection.

Saying "They did something bad so now they deserve all inhumanity" is more or less in the same area with the Sharia laws that demand stoning to death of a woman who has had extramarital sex.

Again, our civilization is what we are defending here, if there is indeed a clash of civilizations between the East and the West. If we are so easily willing to give up on our civilization, we have already lost.
