I'd say that the WTC attack was a bit more than the first sign of a threat

And what was the last time Americans were blown up in such numbers? Not even by the Soviets, I would say.

By the way, a year passed after WTC. Torturing prisoners now can hardly be self-defense, to follow your example of the intended rapist.

Thus, yes, you would not technically be kicking a "guily" person

I would be kicking an agressor. It is called self-defense.

Technically, under US law, an assailant is innocent until proven guilty

Of couse. And it has nothing to do with the concept of self-defense.

Victims have few rights, except the right to prayer for justice.

I am sorry. I did not get this.

we have an enemy who is not American

Some Al-Qaeda were and are American.

... and can't be expected to live by American values or moral thresholds. Thus, our thresholds can be selectively "detuned" to accomodate the value systems of those we are interrogating..

It does not matter what the other guy's value system is. What matters is that the West should not lose its own values in fighting people from other systems. That's the whole point of fighting for our culture, remember?

I do not agree with you that the American interrogators can "selectively detune" their value system to include torture for whom them interrogate. Where is the high moral ground, then? What cultural difference are you defending in this case, if your values are so easily "detunable"?
