Prior to 1914 we had the tax-free very rich then everyone else. If you were a Rockefellar or Vanderbilt you lived like Saddam Hussein in palaces. Great Gatsy stuff. If you were working class you were frequently squashed. In those days the elite rich owned entire national parks of recreation land. St John Virgin Islands and Mount Desert Isle were just part of the Rockefellar estate. The GOP does try to defend those old wealth values. get rid of estate taxes. Problem is it would bankrupt the government or do away with safety nets for the lower income and middle class. Take your pick.
