S Korea's Kepco To Cut Electricity Charges For Households

SEOUL - The state-run Korea Electric Power Corp. , or Kepco, will cut electricity charges for household use and general use by 2.2% and 2%, respectively, starting Jan. 1.
But the dominant South Korean power company will raise the charges for industrial power use by 2.5%, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said. The changes were approved by the commerce ministry Saturday.

The adjustments are part of Kepco's efforts to gradually remove subsidies to various consumer types, ahead of the planned privatization of its power generation units, the commerce ministry said.

To help companies that use more electricity in production, such as steel, cement and petrochemical companies, Kepco will offer a new payment option which can reduce additional costs from the increase, the commerce ministry said.
