you know -- it is somewhat funny -- last year we got the option of a self-directed 401k account (folks can still buy the vanilla funds which are a part of the plan, too). When the man with the plan came by to explain it, he said that we could invest in practically anything, except commodities and he had to say gold specifically for some reason -- I guess he had been asked a few times already -- LOL. He regarded the fact that you couldn't invest more than 1/2 of your funds in the self-directed option and that we were precluded from commdities (esp. gold) as a safeguard against too much foolishness. This from some people that introduced a new QQQ tracking fund around Daq 5000. (almost everyone I talk to here has some of this fund, BTW -- thinking they are in it for the looooong term).
