Mexico City's English Newspaper Closes
Tue Dec 31, 4:09 PM ET

MEXICO CITY - Mexico City's only English-language newspaper, The News,
shut down Tuesday along with its sister Spanish-language publication,
Novedades, after more than 50 years in operation.

"The News and Novedades say Adios," read the front-page English headline
in The News.

Novedades Editores, which published the two newspapers, attributed the
closure to economic reasons.

Novedades was one of the capital's five largest newspapers, with a daily
circulation of about 30,000 and editions in the resort cities of Apulco and
Cancun. Novedades Editores also publishes magazines and comics.

The Spanish-language Novedades published for 65 years and was among
Mexico's leading papers in the 1960s and 1970s.

The News, Mexico City's only English-language newspaper, published for 53
years.

Several local newspapers, including El Universal and El Financiero,
published English-language editions in the past decade, but those were
discontinued.

In the early 1990s, the broadsheet The Mexico City Times, competed for
readership with The News but failed to capture any significant advertising
and ultimately was closed.

This is sad ... for all its problems el DF is one of the great cosmopolitan centres of our species, and having a daily newspaper in other than the local language contributed to that wholeness ... a friend of mine knows a reporter for Novedades/News, also has an ex-girlfriend who teaches english and often uses the News and Novedades as classroom aids ... often the articles were the same, just translated over, even when not they could be used as starts for discussion in english of topical issues of the day ... it is important that numbers of us cross the language barriers of these Américas imho ... when i am here among the anglos i preach the learning of spanish, when among hispanos the advantages of fluent english ... best to mix it up when we're all on this rock together, i think

... de todos modos - ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!
