I guess it sort of depends on the industry. In manufactoring sometimes if your competitors are doing well will mean that they are taking market share away from your company. I usually like to focus on recently depressed markets/industries. I think that it is pretty dangerous time right now many of the stocks I sort of follow are down right now and searched for several nights for new investment and couldn't find any really good ones. Thinking of trying(first time) a option put on some highly valued stocks(DELL, MSFT,.....) or else just wait on the sidelines.
