Getting deeply involved in the middle east is a bad mistake.

Too late.. And backing out now would only make it worse..

The demographics are dictating the course of the Middle East's future.. All that is to be decided now is whether those millions of muslim youths will become suicide "martyrs" intent on bringing down the west through a campaign of terror, or whether they will have a more properous future.

The 9/11 attacks may have been committed by Saudis, but they used our own civilian airliners to commit the deed. We cannot just suddenly become isolationists and leave them room to regroup and catch their breath so they can prepare another attack against us (maybe via a nuclear device contained in a shipping container)...

I obviously agree with you that the Saudis are the head of this militant snake. The Saudis made a Faustian pact with the Wahhabis so they could rule the Arabian peninsula. And that's why liberating, modernizing, and developing Iraq is so important. It's the keystone to the middle east. It separates Iran from Syria, and places a "hostile" regime on the border of Saudi Arabia. And if a Hashemite comes to power there (the Iraqi national congress is headed by one), then we'll have a Hashemite/Saudi face-off which should restore a balance of power in the region.

But as appealing as it might sound, we just cannot disengage now... It has to be on OUR terms, not theirs.
