There are two parts to the service from Verizon, as I see it.

As a voice carrier, it has no equal in the US. Open the CDM9500 and make a call. I witnessed an informal comparison between Vz and AT&T on the last flight from NYC to SFO yesterday. Two arrogant clods seated on either side of me had their phones on throughout the flight (and indeed MQ, we didn't crash) and while we were landing the Vz phone went into the net somewhere over San Jose and the AT&T phone didn't connect until we were on the runway. This could just be a difference in the allowable doppler in the signals.

As a data carrier, Vz sux. The CDM9500 is intentionally crippled to only use the Get It Now service for ringtones and images. And these don't actually work. Can't download images as new wallpaper. Which should be trivial from a data cable. And should allow simple things like an image per caller in the phonebook. And when you get the images, they are not the full size of the screen.

Wait for the camera equipped phones or until Vz gets a clue about what their customers want.
