American Treasury bonds have never defaulted. That's since 1789. Try finding a comparable place to put your money, especially if you are trying to place very large amounts. One year of weakness doesn't mean that much. People flocked to gold and the Swiss franc in the late 70s. Where would you be had you put your money in gold in the late 70's, early '80s? You'd still be waiting to break even on your capital, saying nothing of the interest you would have foregone.
