Tench Re..Nor am I alarmed over a bunch of anti-American protests, for such events have been common over the past two decades. But I do have a problem when Koreans start acting like idiots and get wild delusions of grandeur. It's not out of spite, but rather a fear that success can easily leave Korea as quickly as it came.
I agree completely. I think the protest are a combination of both NK and SK stirring up the crowds for their own interests. Roh's chief aim is to reform the chaebol, the chaebol have successfully resisted most of Jungs sunshine reforms. By helping NK stir up trouble, Roh can get the investors backing the chaebol to leave, thereby getting the chaebol to agree to his terms, without being blamed for the ensuing layoffs; by blaming investor flight to GW's alledged mishandling of NK. And you are right, this kind of strategy can backfire, it could cause the collapse of all of the chaebols, causing massive layoffs and turmoil. However if he can control the necessary conflagration,, the needed reforms could get SK out of its doldrums, and revive all of Asia. Am I correct in that analysis by the way.
NK obviously is trying to blackmail the US, and SK is trying to use the US to achieve its aims. No matter what, the US will be used and abused if it decides to enter the fray, and that is why GW wisely is staying out, despite all of the pressures being put. |
