This is so sad about the animals, Andrew. And I think it is a very good example of what environmentalists are doing, trying to get everyone's attention NOW to the plight of endangered species, particularly in the area of strong legislation and enforcement so that there is no economic incentive for poaching.
It's also a very good example that once something is endangered, it is fragile, and at the end any one of a number of factors can RAPIDLY signal disaster. This is particularly in response to the post--I believe it was Michael Cummings'--where the argument is made that environmental disasters happen very slowly, with plenty of warning. Not true!!
I saw a documentary on the mountain gorillas last week, and they are very much like us. They are a species, like chimpanzees, that is definitely capable of advanced, rational thought. They are kind and loving parents, each one having distinct personalities, and they are able to convey emotions, help and support each other, and comfort their sick. They deserve better treatment.
Is there someplace to send emergency donations or any other way to help? |
