14:04 ET Auto sales stronger than expected
Consumers may not have been at Home Depot or RadioShack in December, but apparently they were loading up on new cars instead. With the strong GM sales report, total sales of US-produced cars are likely to be in the 15 mln range for Dec, much stronger than November's 12.6 mln unit pace and the 13.1 mln consensus. This strength will likely be more than enough to offset soft chain store sales and lift both Dec Retail Sales and Q4 GDP. Repeat after me: the consumer is not dead.
