Since sapphire is non-conductive, two leads (wires) have to be attached to the chip. Some of the surface of the LED is used to make the electrical connections. Sapphire-based LEDs have a light emitting area resembling a double diamond or a dumbbell.

SiC is a conductor. Cree chips are mounted in the standard fashion, with just a top lead to the chip and the other lead through the base of the chip.

The advantage to Cree is that for a given degree of brightness (i.e., quantum efficiency), Cree chips are brighter because they have a greater area emitting light. In addition, Cree chips are mounted the same way as standard (red) LED. Sapphire chips are more expensive to install onto circuit boards.

When Nakamura left Nichia, he received a dozen or so offers of employment from companies seeking his employment. I think he choose to establish a relationship with Cree because he thought they were a good bet to win the HB-LED wars. (He has stated that he wanted to work with a small, entrepreneurial company.)

I think the departure of Nakamura destroyed Nichia R&D program.
