New mobile tariff will lead to monopoly : AITUC
Statesman News Service
NEW DELHI, Jan. 3

thestatesman.net

The AITUC today came out against the move to slash mobile-to-mobile STD tariff by the cellular operators, saying it would lead to creation of a monopoly of private players who will manipulate the tariff in future according to their own whims, will hit the land-phone systems especially the government owned BSNL.

The AITUC chief, Mr Gurudas Das Gupta also alleged that the move was part of a corporate war and could also render PCO/STD booth operators jobless.

“Although being done in the name of giving benefit to the users, its ultimate intention is to eliminate as many firms operating in the field as possible and foster the growth of
monopoly... The ultimate aim of the cellular operators was to destroy the existing land based telecommunications system by enticing away large number of consumers particularly business and corporate houses. If the cell phone companies are allowed to take over control of the telecommunication system today, the telecom giant tomorrow will manipulate tariff according to their own whim,” the union statement said.
