"If this is what 1x can do then its over for 1x. Even GPRS works better than what you are describing."
I've used Vision (1X), PCS wireless web (CDMAOne), and ATT mMode (GPRS), and as far as functionality and snappiness of the included wap browsers are concerned, I would rank them (from fastest to slowest): GPRS, CDMAOne, 1X. The Vision phone I use (Sanyo 5300) is definitely capable of the theoretical faster speeds, since i can download java midlets and ringtones at around 6 kB/s (~60 kbs), as well as upload and download pictures at speeds higher than 14.4 kbs. Also, the speed as a modem tethered to my laptop is good. However, the wap browser performance is atrocious, considering the expectations. I should also mention that I experience far more network timeouts trying to access data services using my 1X phone than with the others. All in all, I don't see any material benefit to 1X, except with a laptop. As far as mobile devices go, GPRS is competitive, performance-wise, if not price-wise. |
