That is surprising that Sany0 4900 would have a browser that was more up to date than Sanyo 5300. My experience? It is a little slow. I think this is part of the same "latency" problem that we hear about with respect to PTT. It is slow in initiating new links or moving from link to link. I haven't tried any kind of real download yet that might test the ongoing speed. This might be a problem similar to the "waking up" the signal in cdma packetswitching. (There are some good articles on this issue with respect to Push to Talk at an earlier time on the thread).
