Vietnam to Look for Uranium for Nuclear Plant, Lao Dong Reports 2003-01-03 06:03 (New York)
Hanoi, Jan. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Vietnam's mining department will look for uranium ore to help power a proposed nuclear power plant, Lao Dong newspaper reported, citing a government document. The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment plans to investigate reserves of uranium in Vietnam, the head of the ministry wrote in a letter to the national government. The uranium would be used if a nuclear power plant is built, the report said. Vietnam also plans to assess limestone reserves for use in the cement industry, Lao Dong said. Vietnam will also look for lead, zinc, manganese and copper in northern Vietnam, for gold in central Vietnam and for tin in the south. Vietnam's atomic energy agency plans to submit a feasibility study to the government by the end of the year on the construction of a $1.5 billion, 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant, which would be the nation's first. |
