My feeling about their installed user base keeping them afloat is analogous to my feeling about how the lifeboats helped when the Titanic sunk. Apple is promoted as being unsinkable because it is such a great computer -- I don't argue the technical merits of the computer -- I just think it will be "around" longer than others that have given up on their efforts to be proprietary, because Apple has a larger user base than the others that disappeared did.
As for owning Apple stock as a long term investment - too risky now. Short term trading, ok, for those who are nimble and best of all for those who can close out their positions each day so as not to be torpedoed by adverse news after the market closes.
Anyone who is interested in buying out Apple - only at a very good price, but what is that price? Considering the downward trend in their user base relative to the accelerating trend of "IBM compatible" user base, the current stock price is too high.
Apple should have tried harder to sell the company before Windows 95 came out. The "too low" price they could have sold out for then is no doubt "too high" now.
